MONICA EK is professor in Wood Chemistry at KTH, the Royal Institute of Technology, and head of the Division of Wood Chemistry and PulpTechnology. She has a PhD in Wood Chemistry from KTH. Monica Ek has before KTH had positions as research manager at Innventia (1992-1995) and Stora Enso (1995-1999). The whole career has been focused on a close cooperation between academy and industry, both considering education and research. In her teaching activities there is always industrial influence, as guest teachers or study trips for the students. The students are promoted to participate in various activities with society. Monica Ek is a link between students and future employers. Monica Ek was 2015 awarded as the KVIST woman of the year (KvinnoriSkogsindustrin) and she has inspired many young talents, especially women, to a future career in forest industry business. Monica Ek is also editor for the Swedish textbooks Pulp and Paper Chemistry Technology used at all Swedish Universities with forestry/pulp and paper education.
Monica Eks scientific activities involve in a number of national/international projects focusing on development of new materials and value added products from wood raw material within the biorefinery concept, some exampels are, antibacterial fibers, dissolving fibers from kraft pulp for textile fibers, bark biorefinery, cellulose based insulation materials and chlorine free bleaching.
Monica Ek has been Director of Graduate Studies at the School of Chemical Science and Engineering, including 250 PhD students. Monica Ek has examined 7PhD students as main supervisor. Monica Ek is frequently organizing and participating as presenter at international and national conferences and as reviewer at PhD dissertations. She has recently been appointed to American Chemical Society Cellulose Division Award Chair.
